Rice chaff is a highly lignified material that can be used alternatively as ruminant feed; however, the depolymerization of carbohydrates in this cellulosic material is hampered by its high lignin content. Therefore, the objective was to treat rice chaff with Pleurotus ostreatus and evaluate its potential use in ruminant feed, using the technique of in vitro gas production and chemical composition. A significant effect was found after 20 days of treatment with the fungus on the nutritional quality of the chaff, reflected in an increase in crude protein (CP) of up to 37%, as well as a reduction in lignin (LDA) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of 54% and 27%, respectively. Finally, the modification of these compounds by the fungus was manifested in a 40% increase in gas production compared to the control. Thus, treating rice husk with lignolytic fungi is a viable alternative for improving the nutritional value of this type of byproduct and making better use of this material, especially during times of forage shortage.
