Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The development of the study focused on the research question: What is the prevalence of syndrome Obstructive Sleep Apnea - OSA in older adults? METHODS: Descriptive cross-sectional study of census type. For data collection was applied: the FASARO –Self Form for Warning Signs of Oral Breathing, the Berlin Sleep Questionnaire, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The population was 20 elderly men and women institucio-nalized. RESULTS: The study showed a high prevalence of sleep disorders in the population asses-sed. The instruments used for this study showed internal consistency and graphically showed the degree of association between the different variables of analysis. ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION: The results of this study show a high correspondence with those reported in the literature, espe-cially in regard to the relationship older major difficulties with sleep and sex as a determining fac-tor of OSA. On the other hand, it underscores the close relationship between oral breathing and  OSAS. CONCLUSIONS: Most rated elderly, have trouble sleeping, but not all are related to OSA, so you should delve more about identifying the etiology of the problems that afflict the elderly.
