Although physical inactivity and sedentary behavior have negative effects on health, between 22% and 80% of university students are physically inactive. In addition, university life is often associated with reduced sleep duration, which impacts health. Studies establishing the relationship between these three variables in university students, particularly in the Colombian context, are scarce. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the relationship between sleep duration, physical activity level, and sedentary time in students of a health faculty in Cali in 2019.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 453 health students. Sociodemographic characteristics and sleep duration were collected using a characterization questionnaire, while physical activity and sedentary time were measured through the short version of the IPAQ. The relationship between variables was analyzed using Pearson’s Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test.
Results: The median sleep duration was 7 hours (IQR: 6.5 – 8), one-fourth of the population had a low physical activity level, and 81.25% remained seated for 6 or more hours per day. No significant relationship was found between physical activity and sedentary time with sleep duration (p=0.627 and p=0.637, respectively).
Conclusion: No relationship was found between physical activity level or sedentary time and students’ sleep duration. However, factors such as sex, age, and place of origin are determinant aspects influencing physical activity levels, sedentary behavior, and sleep duration.
