Review of results from the use of the six sigma methodology: case of metal-mechanical companies

Six Sigma methodology, when used with expertise, can be a very useful continuous improvement tool, focused on eliminating errors and reducing process instability. Six Sigma has been adopted by a wide range of industries, including metalworking, where its use in quality, efficiency and profitability has yielded significant improvements. In addition, it has proven to be effective in organizations of diverse nature, however, the focus of this article is on the metalworking industries, in addition it is based on the continuous improvement of business processes and the elimination of defects, resulting in greater efficiency and quality of the product and / or service. The purpose of this article is to review and qualitatively examine the scientific literature available in different databases and official web pages, using as search words: Six Sigma, metalworking industry, Six Sigma methodology application. Obtaining crucial information related to the proposed objective on the use of Six Sigma methodology in companies of the metal-mechanic sector, identifying the main tools and techniques used, as well as the results and challenges faced during its implementation. The purpose of this article is to show with the literature review that the methodology can help to solve problems in different areas within the metal-mechanical companies, since positive results are evidenced in its applications. Within the article, the review of results from the use of this methodology in the metal-mechanic sector focused on industrial noise, defect reduction, productivity and/or quality is addressed. With the results, some quality tools that helped to solve errors or problems with the methodological approach used are mentioned. For the selection of information that was used, the variables that intervened in each text were studied and it was decided to classify by the type of failure to be solved, in addition to grouping the tools that could be used by each of the authors to synthesize information and be able to generalize from the types of errors to work within the company.
