Knowledge has become one of the intangibles most appreciated by organizations due to its value for decision making and achieving competitive advantage. In universities it is necessary to have technologies that allow storing, recovering and using knowledge from research projects. This study presents the development of a research information management system implemented as a knowledge repository. The unified process was used as a software development methodology. The developed system was applied in a case study at the National University of Colombia in Manizales. The results show that the system made it possible to manage and monitor the products derived from the execution of projects carried out by research groups. In addition, the system was tested for a MinCiencias call aimed at measuring and recognizing research groups.
