Orofacial anthropometry measurement of transverse growth of the mandible

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the existence of statistical relationships between orofacial anthropometric measurements of the anteroposterior and vertical mandibular growth vectors using a transverse measurement pattern. METHODS: Orofacial anthropometric measurements for mandibular growth vectors proposed by Rangel, Albarracín, Rivera, Mogollón & Mantilla, including an additional measure to assess transverse growth; between mandibular angles; through the use of a parking meter. A census-type study was conducted on 74 subjects aged between 2 and 5 years. Statistical analysis was performed using canonical correlations. RESULTS: Inferential relationships were found between Body Mass Index (BMI) and the measurements of Rangel, Albarracín, Rivera, Mogollón & Mantilla; however, the evaluation of transverse growth did not show significant relationships with either BMI or the other measures. Median ages for mandibular growth are reported. ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION: In the age range evaluated, transverse mandibular growth was not related to the other mandibular measurements. Greater development of the right half of the mandible was observed, possibly associated with masticatory habits, which should be studied to further investigate this aspect. CONCLUSIONS: Transverse mandibular growth before molar eruption cannot be used as an index of mandibular growth or facial symmetry for the evaluation of orofacial motor skills and myofunctional therapy.
