Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Normally aging older adults will experience certain changes in both receptive and expressive language due to impairments in higher mental functions. Ideally, these changes should not affect daily communicative tasks. To this end, intervention programs are developed to improve the performance of language skills in normal aging. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted for published studies on receptive and expressive language interventions in normally aging older adults. The question was designed using the PICO methodology. Data analysis was performed using the PRISMA methodology, which is based on four phases: identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion, using the databases PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Oxford Journals, Taylor & Francis, Scopus, and Sage Reference. RESULTS: After applying the aforementioned methodologies, a total of 60 articles were selected, of which only 30 were able to address the research questions. ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION: Based on the articles found, it is evident that both receptive and expressive language can be effectively addressed through their constituent components, such as memory, lexical access, and confrontational naming, among others. CONCLUSIONS: Thanks to this systematic review, ways to address language in older adults with normal aging were identified; it is important for speech therapists to be able to intervene more deeply in these processes, as this would contribute to the national and international recognition of the profession with this population.
