This article characterizes the retirement expectations of employees of public institutions of higher education in Pamplona, Norte de Santander. Using an epistemological and descriptive approach, the perception was analyzed taking into account social, economic, health and institutional factors. In this sense, and although there are national regulations for companies to foresee within the management of human talent strategies, policies or routes that accompany their employees in the phase of retirement, it is imperative that these are aligned with the expectations of the worker, who is the active subject of the process. The absence of strategies or policies within organizations, regardless of regulatory compliance, can have a negative impact on the emotional, economic and social well-being of the employee approaching this transition. For this reason, it is necessary to analyze the expectations of employees regarding retirement, in order to strengthen this last phase of human talent management. As a result, there is evidence of a diversity of concerns and motivations related to quality of life, financial situation, physical and mental health, as well as recognition after retirement. It is concluded that workers make up a diverse population where they are present and share different economic levels and academic, emotional and financial training to face life after retirement. In view of this, it is clear the challenge for institutions to create efficient and effective strategies to accompany workers integrally in the retirement process, not only to provide economic stability, but also psychological well-being.
