Social representations in the choice of profession or occupation among students of a public institution

Abstract

This article analyzes the social representations of career choices among students at a public institution in the city of Cúcuta from a qualitative perspective. It examines how family, social, and institutional influences affect the construction of meanings, beliefs, and imaginaries that guide young people's vocational decisions. The study employed a phenomenological design and techniques such as semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and participant observation, allowing for an understanding of the participants' experiences and perceptions regarding their academic and professional future. The findings show that vocation, personal growth, and social status occupy a central place in these social representations, along with attitudes of motivation and commitment, which coexist with feelings of insecurity regarding the career choice process.
