The blind ruler: political re-readings of 'oedipus rex' and the crisis of legitimacy in modern democracies

This article examines the tragedy Oedipus Rex by Sophocles from a dual perspective: as a classic work and as a critical allegory on the erosion of authority in contemporary democracies. Its primary objective is to analyze the transition from the leader seen as a providential "savior" to a ruler delegitimized by their own institutional blindness. Thru a qualitative-hermeneutic methodology, which establishes a dialog between Max Weber's theory of legitimacy and deep literary analysis, the research demonstrates that modern political hubris does not arise from ignorance of a bloodline, but from a systemic disconnection with social reality and citizen demands. This disconnection generates a kind of cognitive and bureaucratic "blindness" that anticipates and accelerates the collapse of the social contract. Ultimately, the legitimacy of the 21st century depends on a shared vision and radical transparency, without which the ruler, in their quest for control, paradoxically ends up becoming the agent of the "plague" of instability and corruption they intended to combat.
