Family poultry farming in the Comarca Lagunera faces conditions of high vulnerability stemming from aridity, water stress, and the technical and economic limitations of production units. This case study analyzes how an adverse event transformed agency and knowledge negotiation among a small backyard poultry producer, his worker, and the technical team during a process of interdisciplinary accompaniment. Using a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentary analysis of logbooks were triangulated through thematic analysis. The findings show that administrative management assistance strengthened the producer’s self-efficacy through the use of record-keeping and financial planning; however, the absence of a comprehensive sanitary plan was perceived as a determining factor in the total flock mortality. This event acted as a disorienting dilemma that fostered processes of critical reflection, learning reconstruction, and knowledge negotiation among the involved actors. It is concluded that interdisciplinarity is a necessary condition for sustainable rural interventions: administrative management without comprehensive sanitary accompaniment can generate new vulnerabilities.
