Oral narrative performance in preschool children: a comparative analysis between elicitation and retelling tasks

The development of children’s narrative skills is a key indicator of linguistic competence and a predictor of academic achievement, particularly during the preschool years. This study aimed to analyze and compare the oral narrative performance of four- and five-year-old children through the elicitation of a daily-life activity and the retelling of an adapted story. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with eighty-nine preschool children from Resistencia, Chaco province, Argentina. The narratives were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed considering structural and linguistic variables. The results showed adequate performance, with age-related progression. Story comprehension was identified as the main factor associated with narrative performance, highlighting the influence of structural supports. We concluded that story retelling promotes more organized narrative production, supporting its value in speech-language assessment and intervention
