Human rights education: perspectives and interpretations of students at a public institution

This study explores the importance of human rights and forgiveness in Colombia based on the perceptions of tenth-grade students. For data collection, an open-ended interview supported by a question guide was used, which made it possible to understand the students’ opinions, knowledge, and reflections on these topics. The research focused on identifying the reasons why tenth-grade students have gaps in their knowledge about human rights and forgiveness. Based on the analysis conducted, the need to strengthen these contents within the Social Sciences course became evident, to promote spaces for reflection, awareness, and citizenship education regarding the duties, rights, and responsibilities of each student. In conclusion, it was found that students recognize the importance of including the study of human rights and forgiveness in the school context, not only as theoretical content but also as tools for coexistence, reconciliation, and peacebuilding. In this sense, teaching these topics can contribute to the formation of more conscious and respectful individuals who are able to understand the value of forgiveness as a social practice that fosters learning, coexistence, and the transformation of conflicts.
