Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze agrobiodiversity conditions and the perceptions of residents of El Tambo, Tosagua Canton, regarding the relevance of Project-Based Learning (PBL) as a flood-response strategy. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach with a descriptive scope and a non-experimental, cross-sectional design. Data were collected through a survey administered to 45 farming household heads and an observation checklist applied to their 45 plots. Four community leaders participated as key informants but were not included in the percentage-based results. The findings showed that 82% of the plots had experienced crop losses due to seasonal flooding, with monoculture predominating, while 73% lacked properly maintained drainage channels. Although 38% of respondents reported that they had never participated in PBL-based training, 80% perceived it favorably as a means of improving community organization and reducing agricultural risks. Favorable social-capital conditions were identified, including a 69% willingness to engage in cooperative work and, according to 78% of the observations, the availability of suitable areas for demonstration gardens. These findings reflect diagnosed conditions and self-reported perceptions rather than the evaluation of an implemented intervention. It is concluded that PBL focused on local agrobiodiversity represents a relevant strategy valued by the community, although its effectiveness should be confirmed through further studies.
