Abstract

Specific Language Impairment limits the communication and participation of children diagnosed with it. Its symptomatology is diverse and includes limitations in oral comprehension and production, as well as reduced passive vocabulary. Passive vocabulary is a key factor in language comprehension and is linked to successful communication, highlighting the importance of analyzing the literature on intervention programs with an emphasis on this skill from early stages, considering the contexts in which children live and interact. Several intervention programs target the families of children with Specific Language Impairment. Therefore, the purpose of this narrative review is to compare the effectiveness of these programs, assessing fidelity, materials used, implementation duration, post-treatment follow-up, and other criteria. It also aims to analyze the different skills targeted for intervention in each program and how vocabulary development is addressed. An advanced search was conducted in databases (PubMed, ASHA, Cochrane, and Google Scholar), selecting five articles from the period 2019–2024. Various programs, their implementation methods, and target populations were analyzed, considering treatment frequency and duration, fidelity in implementation, the recipient of the intervention, and how these variables influenced children's language, communication, and vocabulary. The results of the five analyzed programs demonstrate the effectiveness of treatment across different modes of intervention delivery. In conclusion, there is a lack of structured programs to train caregivers of children with Specific Language Impairment to create enriched home environments and foster both passive vocabulary and various linguistic and communicative abilities.
