Innovation as a sustainability strategy and its effect on the performance of the Mexican sugar industry

Abstract

Mexico is a country with a large participation of the sugar industry, which generates economic and social welfare; however, its processes contribute to environmental deterioration. The objective is to analyze innovation as a sustainability strategy and its relationship with factory performance. Forty-five mills were analyzed using the one-factor Anova technique, comparing the behavior of groups according to sustainable practices. The results indicate that good sustainability practices are achieved through innovation and those mills with a high Global Sustainability Index (ISG) have higher yields; innovating allows new ways of contributing to sustainability.
