Abstract

The presidential elections on July 1st, 2018 in Mexico were unprecedented in the country's democratic history, as the victory of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) from the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party was resounding. Following these elections, the following question arose: Do followers and sympathizers of MORENA perceive López Obrador as the ideal president Mexico should have? To answer this question, this study constructs the image of an ideal president and the perception of the winner for different political parties. Subsequently, using the Hamming distance, measurements are obtained to establish the proximity (or distance) between the image of an ideal president and the perception that each political party has of López Obrador. The result of the research shows that MORENA sympathizers perceive López Obrador as the president closest to the ideal president for Mexico.
