Extreme maternal morbidity is a priority issue in health systems globally, since it alters the course and life project of both the mother and the child. The purpose of this document is to review in general the main events associated with SMM (Extreme Maternal Morbidity) or SMM (Severity Maternal Morbidity), its consequences, complications and some of the actions implemented in different parts of the world to improve maternal health. . It is concluded that the most frequent events in MME are preeclampsia and bleeding associated with pregnancy, the consequences are not only complications and physical sequelae for the health of the mother and child pairing, but also other complications on the emotional level and experiences that they mark the lives of pregnant women, including their support network. Finally, some actions that are implemented worldwide to improve maternal health are described.
