Case study on the perception of infidelity in monogamous and open couples

Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the perception that monogamous and open couples have about infidelity. The study was conducted under a descriptive qualitative approach, with a narrative design. In addition, a documentary review, an in-depth interview, and a focus group were carried out with 4 participants from the city of Medellin (2 men and 2 women) who corresponded to a type of monogamous and open relationship. The results affirm that monogamous couples imply an exclusive and committed connection between two people; while open relationships challenge conventional norms by allowing couples to explore sexual connections outside the main relationship. In conclusion, a complex interplay of emotional and situational factors was found to influence each individual's decision making and behaviors. In the case of monogamous couples, infidelity may arise from feeling dissatisfied with their current relationship, either in terms of emotional intimacy or sexual connection. On the other hand, in open couples, infidelity may be a violation of established agreements, although openness may provide greater freedom and satisfaction in terms of sexual and emotional diversity, it also requires constant and honest communication to maintain trust and avoid infidelity
