Ultimate Frisbee as an Alternative School Sport: A Pedagogical Proposal from the Ethics of Care Approach

Abstract

Sports practices have been globally recognized as an effective means for the holistic development of human beings, as they are fundamentally acknowledged as one of the epicenters for the promotion of human rights, personal growth, and human dignity. However, this essence has recently been overshadowed by a predominantly biological approach often applied to what is termed educational sport. Therefore, it is necessary to orient this pedagogy toward continuous dialogue, where students actively participate in constructing their own athletic identities and those of others, using a multilevel perspective guided by an inclusive framework such as the ethics of care, which emphasizes caring for oneself and others. In this context, a pedagogical proposal is presented, guided by the ethics of care, which aims to effectively direct students’ social development processes through sport, considering Ultimate Frisbee as an opportunity to strengthen athletic training by promoting its “spirit of the game,” which fully embraces the values of sport as an expression of freedom, dignity, and human recognition.
