The World Health Organization (WHO) declared
the COVID-19 pandemic on March 11, 2020.
Government efforts have focused on implementing
strategies to promote people's physical health and
prevent virus transmission. However, the
implications of the pandemic on the mental health
of different groups have been largely overlooked.
The objective is to analyze the impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic on various sectors of society,
according to the scientific evidence available in the
literature. Materials and Methods: A narrative
review was conducted. Three bibliographic sources
were consulted: Scielo, LILACS, and PubMed, to
find documents published from December 2019 to
May 20, 2020. Search equations were used in both
Spanish and English: salud mental AND
coronavirus, efectos del coronavirus AND salud
mental. Results: Anxiety, depression, stress, sleep
disorders, and distress were found to be the most
frequent symptoms during the pandemic, both in
the general population and among healthcare
professionals. The review also gathered
information on the mental health impact on people
diagnosed with mental disorders and the changes in
mental health care services. Conclusion: The
COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the
mental health of the population by disrupting
everyday life, with consequences such as isolation,
unemployment, and an increase in domestic
violence.
