Groundwater has been used as an alternative to surface water. Normally, the volume of water stored in aquifers is large compared to the recharge flow, which means that the residence time of groundwater in aquifers is longer than that of surface water in its reservoir (rivers and lakes). The objective of this work is to link geological, hydrological, hydrogeological, geotechnical, social, economic, and cultural studies, supported by GIS, thus enabling an accurate diagnosis of the current state of aquifers in Colombia (Duitama case study) and the formulation of techniques necessary for their proper management, conservation, and prevention of contamination. The scope of this study involves the development of a conceptual hydrological model, evaluation of annual extraction volumes, evaluation of aquifer reserves and recharge, determination of the yield of the aquifer in exploitation, prioritization of groundwater use, and development of an environmental management plan that will allow for the implementation of groundwater protection measures.
