Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder in Primary School Children's School Performance. Document Review

Abstract

ADHD is a neurobiological disorder that significantly affects the participation and academic functioning of schoolchildren. The research focused on analyzing the influence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder on the academic performance of children in primary school. A qualitative approach was used, at a descriptive
level and a documentary review design. The results indicate that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is characterized by a persistent pattern of hyperactivity, impulsivity and lack of attention, which is more intense and severe than that
commonly observed in children before the age of 12. These dimensions inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity, are fundamental components of the disorder, therefore, the lack of attention for prolonged periods are indicative of this disorder,
manifesting also in a dispersed attention, as a consequence children who present lack of attention have difficulties to focus on a task and can get bored quickly, even after a few minutes, likewise hyperactive children have difficulties to regulate
their actions according to the desires of other people or the demands of the environment, finally impulsive children have an affected self-regulation system in certain circumstances and whose actions are impulsive comma are identified as individuals with a deficit in the development of behavioral inhibitory control; In conclusion this deficit entails other elements, such as cognitive difficulties in the
way of approaching the resolution of problems such as school dropouts, poor academic performance and a school performance not expected for the academic grade.
