Abstract

Hypothesis: To describe the intra- and inter-examiner reliability of thigh circumference measurement, depending on the examiner's previous experience and thigh muscle mass. To describe the most reliable distance to the patella for measurement, as well as whether it is necessary to take these measurements during active muscle contraction and during relaxation. To establish the distance (in mm) from which we can be sure that the differences obtained are due to changes in the actual thigh circumferences and not to measurement error.

Material and method: The thigh circumference was measured at 5, 10, and 15 cm from the patella in 16 volunteers (9 athletes and 7 sedentary individuals) by 7 examiners with varying degrees of experience. Results: Ninety-three percent of the measurements had an intraobserver reliability > 0.90. Measuring reliability using the correlation coefficient is not an adequate index, as high coefficients present an excessive range of variation.

Conclusion: The most reliable measurements are obtained 10 cm from the pole of the patella. Measurements are more reliable in sedentary individuals than in athletes and are subject to the examiner's level of experience.
